Medical Acne Care
Medical acne care is a series of visits rather than a single procedure, so the cost question is less about one price and more about what each visit contains. A visit might be extraction and cleansing only, or it might add a peel, light-based step, calming mask or an injection into a deep lesion. Knowing which of these are included helps you compare quotes fairly.
How it works
A clinician examines the skin, then clears blocked pores and whiteheads with sterile tools and may add a topical or light-based step to reduce bacteria and inflammation. Deep, painful lesions are sometimes treated with a small injection that settles swelling. Prescription medicine, if the doctor advises it, is a separate decision with its own costs. Because acne changes from week to week, the plan is adjusted at each visit rather than fixed in advance.
Who it may suit
- People with recurring blackheads, whiteheads or inflamed pimples that over-the-counter products have not settled.
- Anyone who wants a doctor to judge whether the skin needs extraction, a peel or medication.
- People who want a visit schedule that can be paused when the skin is calm.
The treatment day
- Skin assessment. The doctor reviews the type of lesions, how long they have been present, products in use and any medicines you take.
- Cleansing and extraction. Pores are opened and cleared with sterile instruments. This is the core of most visits.
- Add-on step. Depending on the plan, a peel, light-based treatment, calming mask or targeted injection may be added.
- Home routine and next visit. You receive a home routine and a suggested interval, which is often every two to four weeks while acne is active.
Aftercare
- Keep the skin gently cleansed and avoid picking, even where extraction marks look red.
- Use sunscreen daily, because inflamed spots can leave dark marks that last longer in sun.
- Hold off on strong exfoliating acids or retinoids until the doctor says they are fine to restart.
- Avoid heavy makeup for the rest of the day if the skin feels tender.
Things to know first
- Redness, tenderness and the occasional small scab are common for a day or two; temporary flare-ups after a visit can occur.
- People taking isotretinoin need to tell the doctor, because some add-on steps are not suitable during or soon after that medicine.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding limit which medicines and acids can be used.
- Results vary by person, and acne often needs several visits before it settles.
- Scarring from earlier acne is a separate concern with its own treatments and costs.
What the price of acne care depends on
Most clinics price acne care per visit, but a visit is not a fixed object. One quote may cover extraction and a mask; another may include a peel, a light session and a calming injection. Ask for the visit written out step by step, so you can see whether you are comparing like with like.
Frequency matters as much as the per-visit figure. Because acne is usually managed every two to four weeks while active, the total depends on how many visits the doctor expects and when it is reasonable to stop. Packages of several visits can lower the per-visit figure, but they also commit you in advance, so ask what happens to unused visits if the skin clears early.
Separate lines to look for are the consultation, any prescription medicine, spot injections for deep lesions, take-home products, and VAT. An itemized quote should show each of these as included, extra or not applicable.
Medical Acne Care: common questions
Is acne care priced per visit or per course?
Both exist. Single visits are common, and clinics may also offer a prepaid course. Ask what the course covers, how long it stays valid and whether unused visits can be refunded or transferred.
Why do two clinics quote differently for the same name of treatment?
The name often hides different contents. One visit may be extraction only, while another adds a peel, light step or injection. Compare the listed steps, not the title.
Are prescription medicines included?
Usually not. Medicine is a separate decision made by the doctor and is typically billed separately from the visit. Ask for it to be shown as its own line.
Does the price change if my acne is severe?
It can. More active skin may need more steps per visit or more visits overall, and the doctor may suggest medicine alongside. The final plan is set after the in-person exam.
