IPL Photofacial
Intense pulsed light treats sun damage, redness and uneven tone in a series. The price question is mostly how many sessions are planned and whether the face, neck or hands are included.
How it works
A handpiece releases broad-spectrum light through a filter chosen for the target: brown spots absorb one range of wavelengths, small red vessels another. The light is absorbed and heats the target, which the body then clears. Treatment is often done on the entire face and repeated three to five times a few weeks apart. Cost depends on the number of sessions, the area and any specific filters or add-ons. IPL is not a laser, and results vary by person.
Who it may suit
- Sun spots and a mottled tone
- Mild diffuse redness and small visible vessels
- Skin that needs a general refresh
- People who can follow strict sun protection
The treatment day
- Skin check. The doctor checks skin type, tan and medications, since IPL is not suitable for every complexion.
- Cooling gel and eye shields. Gel is applied and eyes are shielded.
- Light pulses. Pulses are applied over the area, often with a snapping or warm feeling.
- Soothing and review. A cooling mask may be used, and the doctor sets the next appointment.
Aftercare
- Brown spots may darken and flake over about a week
- Sunscreen every day, with no tanning
- Avoid picking and harsh scrubs
- Use gentle skincare while the skin settles
- Contact the clinic if you see blisters or lasting darkening
Things to know first
- Burns, blisters, temporary darkening and, less often, lasting pigment change can occur
- Not suitable on tanned skin or many darker skin tones
- Photosensitizing medicines, isotretinoin and pregnancy are usual reasons to wait
- It does not treat deeper wrinkles or scars
- Results vary by person
What the price of an IPL photofacial depends on
Count the sessions first. IPL is rarely a one-time treatment, and a course of several visits is common. A per-session figure that looks low can total quite a lot, so ask what the doctor expects, and whether a package lowers the per-visit amount.
Area and add-ons come next. The face alone is a standard unit, but the neck, chest and hands may be separate lines. Some clinics combine IPL with a soothing mask, a brightening step or a second device, each of which may carry its own price.
Handpiece and filter choice can also appear on a quote, especially when different filters are used for pigment and for redness. Check whether tax and aftercare products are included, and whether a missed or postponed session in a package can be rescheduled.
IPL Photofacial: common questions
Is IPL cheaper than laser?
Often, per session, but the number of sessions and the target matter. Compare totals for the same goal.
Why do some quotes list the neck separately?
Because the area is larger and takes longer. Ask for each zone in writing.
Can I buy a package and skip sessions?
Ask about expiry and rescheduling. Policies differ from clinic to clinic.
Does the filter affect price?
Sometimes. A quote may list pigment and redness steps separately.
