How it works

Botulinum toxin is a purified protein that temporarily relaxes targeted muscles by reducing the nerve signal that makes them contract. For expression lines, this softens wrinkles that form from repeated movement. For the jaw muscle or sweat glands it is used differently, with larger amounts or different placement. The effect begins over several days and wears off after a few months, so upkeep means repeat sessions.

Who it may suit

• People bothered by frown, forehead or eye-corner lines caused by movement.
• Those who want a short visit and little recovery.
• Some people with a prominent jaw muscle or excess underarm sweating, after a doctor's evaluation.

The treatment day

1. Consultation and mapping. The doctor studies your expressions and muscle strength and decides where and how much to inject.
2. Product and unit confirmation. The product and the number of units are confirmed before the vial is opened.
3. Injection. Small injections are placed in the chosen muscles with a fine needle; ice or numbing cream may be used.
4. Review and touch-up window. A follow-up check, often around two weeks later, shows whether a small adjustment is appropriate.

Aftercare

• Keep your head up for a few hours and leave the treated skin untouched for the day.
• Skip strenuous exercise and heat such as saunas for the rest of the day.
• Small bumps and pinpoint bruises usually fade within hours to a few days.
• Contact the clinic if you notice drooping of an eyelid or brow.

Things to know first

• Possible effects include bruising, headache, uneven results, temporary eyelid or brow drooping, and a stiff look if too much is used.
• Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with certain neuromuscular conditions or an allergy to the product.
• Some antibiotics and muscle-related medicines can interact; tell the doctor about everything you take.
• Results vary by person and fade over a few months.

What the price of botulinum toxin depends on

Units are the denominator. A quote may state a flat price per area, a price per unit, or a price for a stated number of units. Because the same area can need different amounts depending on muscle strength, ask how many units the plan assumes and whether extra units would be billed.

Product is the second variable. Several brands with different manufacturers and dilution practices are in use, and they are not priced alike. The quote should name the brand, and you can ask to see the vial opened. Products from different brands are not interchangeable unit for unit.

Finally, check what else is on the line: the consultation, a follow-up touch-up within a set window, the number of areas, and VAT. Treatments for the jaw or underarms generally involve more units than a single forehead area, so they are usually quoted separately.
